The most characteristic feature of these villages is the omnipresence of stone. From thefoundations to the roof, limestone is everywhere, for in the absence of quality timber, Caussenard builders used it at every level: for the construction of the walls of course, for the raising of the vaults and the construciton of the heavy roof of lauzes: no less than 200 to 450 kg per m².
As you stroll through thealleyways of calades, try to identify the most typical elements of this architecture: semi-underground cellars for raising wine or preserving fruit, vaulted ovens, lauzes roofs, “pas de l’âne”, or singular chimney caps…
