Typical villages around Millau

Just a stone’s throw from Millau, hamlets and villages vie with each other in natural charm and rich heritage to seduce you on your vacation in Aveyron.

With10 villages classified as Plus Beaux Villages de France, Aveyron has risen to the top of France’s most titled departments. You may already know the names of Conques, La Couvertoirade, one of the Templar villages of Larzac or Najac. But near Millau, on the causses or in the Tarn gorges, certain villages and hamlets deserve to be singled out for their remarkable heritage or their harmonious integration into the mineral landscapes where they seem to blend.

THE STONE

IN THE DNA OF CAUSSENARD

The most characteristic feature of these villages is the omnipresence of stone. From thefoundations to the roof, limestone is everywhere, for in the absence of quality timber, Caussenard builders used it at every level: for the construction of the walls of course, for the raising of the vaults and the construciton of the heavy roof of lauzes: no less than 200 to 450 kg per m².

As you stroll through thealleyways of calades, try to identify the most typical elements of this architecture: semi-underground cellars for raising wine or preserving fruit, vaulted ovens, lauzes roofs, “pas de l’âne”, or singular chimney caps…

Many other villages of typical Causse character are worth a visit: Saint-André-de-Vézines and Longuiers on the Causse Noir, Mostuéjouls and Liaucous at the entrance to the Gorges du Tarn ; La Roque-Ste-Marguerite, Saint-Véran or Cantobre in the Gorges de la Dourbie; Montredon, Pierre-fiche on the Larzac plateau, to be explored especially during summer night markets.

And let’s not forget the fascinating Cités Templières et Hospitalières du Larzac… listed as a Unesco World Heritage site!
