Les Gorges de La Jonte, un petit bout de Nature XXL
Les gorges de la Jonte live somewhat in the shadow of their famous neighbor, the gorges du Tarn: yet they form a landscape ensemble that is quite exceptional. Following the winding road from Le Rozier to Meyrueis, discover this wild gorge, with its sheer cliffs from which rise turrets of rock suspended above the void: two giant Vases, the Sèvres and Chinese Vases balanced on the ledge path, the griffon or monk vultures, soaring above the cliffs from where they take flight; to be observed from the terrace of the Maison des vautours.
Aven des Causses: l’envers du décor
It’s the incredible contrast between the richness of the underground world and the aridity of the monotonous steppes of the Causse Méjean that creates the surprise. The most complex forms seem to have taken refuge in the heart of the earth. In this sense, Aven Armand is a must-see destination. The abyss is astonishing in its size -gi-gan-tesque! – its depth and the forest of stone it conceals. It bears no resemblance to the Grotte de Dargilan on the Causse Noir, where a succession of small chambers adorned with pinkish-tinted limestone lacework.

Steppe landscape, a touch of Mongolia…
The world above is that of the steppe! Population density lower than that of the Sahel – 1.5 inhabitants/km² – and to complete the illusion of Central Asia, on the Villaret side, herds of Prezwalski horses graze in semi-liberty!
Good to know: Next to Aven Armand, you can sample Caussen cheeses at Ferme de Hyélzas, or discover the rural life of our great-grandparents at Ferme Caussenarde d’Autrefois.
Sainte-Enimie, listed as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages
Many visitors misspell its name: Sainte-Minniei, Emilie, Eunèmie…. You hear it all, but rarely the right name. Never mind, the mistake would be not to stop! Sainte-Enimie is a superb, picturesque and charming listed village, ideally located at the entrance to the Gorges du Tarn. A visit is a must.
Set sail for the Détroits
Taking a boat or canoe down the Tarn from La Malène, you change your perspective, adopting a new vantage point from before the road was built. The river was once the most natural means of communicating with the valley below. Sailing through the straits means discovering the most spectacular part of the gorge, the deepest and narrowest passage, inaccessible by road. And so are the local beaches: imaginary islands where you can play Robinson, and hope no one comes to your rescue…
