Mountain biking can be divided into several disciplines:
- Touring mountain biking, also known as XC or Cross Country
- Downhill (or DH)
- Enduro.
The terms XC or Cross Country being used more in the competition field, where the key words are speed and technicality.
Here, we’ll use the term VTT rando instead, since we’re talking about routes that are freely accessible and of all levels.
The gradients can sometimes be quite significant, and the circuits are classified according to their difficulty:
Black : confirmed physical and technical level. Distance: more than 35 km – Elevation gain: more than 600 m
Rouge : advanced level, with a requirement for technical mastery. Distance: 20 to 35 km – Ascent: 300 to 600 m
Blue: occasional mountain bikers. Distance: 10 to 20 km – Difference in altitude: 100 to 300 m
Green: for the general public, suitable for mountain bikes. Distance: less than 15 km – Difference in altitude: less than 100 m
Note that the Millau and Grands Causses region can sometimes present fairly brittle terrain, but above all a diversity of trails and surfaces.
It is therefore advisable to bring a mountain bike that is more All Mountain (more comfortable) than Cross Country (faster, less suspended).
